Your marketing is boring! There, I said it. Your accounting firms marketing is boring. As a matter of fact, in general, I find that almost all marketing by accounting firms is boring.

Your CPA style website is boring, outdated, and probably loaded with stale useless content. The ad copy you use is outdated, as is most of the CPA style advertising you use.

If you were your own prospect, do you think you would buy from you? Probably not.

CPA marketing tips can be some of the most frustrating things to find online when all you want to do is sell accounting services. Lots of folks will sell you some CPA advertising and help you get started, but they almost never make a complete analysis of your accounting firm marketing strategies.

There are a lot of accountants who think their only option is to be a CPA. While having CPA as a credential is something to be proud of, as a retired EA (or Enrolled Agent), I am a bit biased about credentials and always take great pride in pointing out the differences between the skillsets being tested on the Special Enrollment Exam and the Uniform CPA Examination.

One (the Special Enrollment Exam) tests almost exclusively on tax law and it's application in the reporting of tax obligations. The other (the Uniform CPA Exam) focuses almost exclusively on financial reporting. Sure the CPA exam includes some questions on taxation, but they are questions on the financial statement reporting of already determined tax obligations.

On today's Accountancy Marketing Webinar, after discussing my treadmill based desk and some followup to an online marketing discussion we had started earlier, we discussed the sale and purchase of accounting practices. Rob brought up a valuation concept we had not thought of before. Your database. We extended that from beyond your client database, which has a bunch of restrictions under the Circular 230 rules, on to yo0ur prospect database, which has a separate value, and is a separate income stream in and of itself.

Some folks are looking for things like how to start a business academy, or want to learn more about how to market accounting services. It all adds up to the same thing, they're looking for a way to get tools and resources that will help their practice name become one of the most “Googled” names for bookkeeping, accounting or tax services on the internet. Or help them build a local bookkeeping, accounting or tax business.
